It was an extraordinary day when I crossed the path with these punan people close to the road of Sajau forest after a day spent planting trees with the locals.
It's very hard to see & meet this tribe since they used to be inside the forest. Punan people is one of the Dayak tribes that can be found in the Sajau River and Mount Benau, Bulungan Regency, North Kalimantan. They live on the move following the animal migration cycle and the plant cycle in the forest. Since ancestral times, the forest has been home to the people. Almost all aspects of Punan life are inseparable from the forest; the forest is a source of food, medicine, and shelter.
Dayak Punan is a tribe that has all the "advantages" among other Dayak tribes. They are known as the most resilient tribe, great at war, hunting, and surviving in the forest.
Punan tribe protect the forest, just like they protect life. "Punan Tribe, an inland tribe guarding the forests of Kalimantan"
